What is Google Desktop?
Google Desktop is a computer’s search feature on steroids. Officially described as a desktop search software, it was first released on 2004 to the delight of users everywhere, it features the ability to text search any kind of file on your computer – be it documents, media files, programs, or anything that can be saved on a user’s hard disk. Google, however, pulled the plug on the development of the program on 2011, as most of its features had been superseded by the improved features of new operating systems, notably Windows 7. At the time of its release, it supported all three major operating systems (Windows, Mac OS, and Linux) and is offered as a free download on Google’s website. Extant Google Desktop installations will have no access to the widgets and updates on the application any longer after the discontinuation of development.Google Desktop, aside from having a powerful local search engine feature, also uses the Sidebar, which popularized this application and helped introduce the technology in subsequent releases of operating systems. The Sidebar offers downloadable plugins called gadgets that extend the application’s functions, such as news, weather, games, alarm clocks, even social media feeds from Twitter or Facebook.
